Chennai Metro Phase 2 Records Three TBM Breakthroughs in Three Days

Chennai Metro Rail Limited has completed three tunnel boring machine breakthroughs in three consecutive days, marking a major Phase II construction milestone.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited has completed three tunnel boring machine breakthroughs in three consecutive days, marking a major Phase II construction milestone.

Chennai Metro Phase II has recorded a concentrated run of tunnelling progress. CMRL said the downline TBMs Kaveri, Marutham and Adyar achieved breakthroughs on September 29, September 30 and October 1 respectively.

The latest milestone came when TBM Adyar completed its drive at RK Salai Station. The 915-metre drive between Royapettah and RK Salai took 277 days and passed below several existing structures, including Peters Bridge, the EPFO building and Andhra School. CMRL said the work was completed without major ground settlement or adverse impact on existing infrastructure.

The achievement is part of the ongoing Chennai Metro Phase 2 tunnelling programme, including the 12-km underground section of Corridor 3 between Kellys and Taramani. For commuters, these construction milestones are important because they move the city closer to a larger network with more route choices and better east-west connectivity.
