Chennai Metro Rail Limited has signed a consultancy agreement for the Phase 1 Network Capacity Enhancement Project. The contract, valued at ₹35.97 crore including applicable taxes and duties, has been awarded to AECOM India in joint venture with NIPPON KOEI India.

The project is intended to increase the operational capacity of Chennai Metro's existing Phase 1 network as ridership grows. The consultancy scope includes project management, detailed design documents for civil, track, electrical and mechanical works, tender assistance, construction supervision and technical support.

For passengers, the significance of this update is long term: capacity enhancement work is designed to support safe and reliable services while the city's metro network continues to expand. Detailed execution timelines will depend on the project's subsequent design and implementation stages.
